Go /p/ro:
• Please post images that are JPG format and ideally smaller than 1 MB, and/or about 1000 pixels on the longest side.
• Expect to be judged harshly. Learn to deal with it.

Want:
• We come here for photos, so post yours as often as possible, even if "image unrelated" to your text.
• "Flickr/500px/Tumblr/Facebook/Portfolio" threads are for critique and networking.
• Use "Recent Photos" threads if you are shy or only want to post a couple of photos.
• Shared raw files which we can collectively edit for discussion of post-processing techniques, are encouraged.
• Use the Catalog to consolidate similar topics (photographic themes, images or technical gear threads).

Do not want:
• Go to /wsr/ or /r/ for specific Photoshop requests.
• Gear threads are discouraged, but identified as necessary. Many users simply hide these threads.

I never want to hear a single person on this board ever say film has the same dynamic range as digital ever again.

Look what happened to my photo...

On my op picture which 2 points are you going to average? You are just moving the goalposts instead of answering.
So one meter reading in the sky. 1 on the tree then take the average of those 2?
>>
>>4307181
Why are you trying to argue with someone after being spoonfed the exact and obvious answer to your mistake?

Go take a digital camera out with you, put it on manual mode, and learn how to properly use your light meter.
>>
>>4307182

There was like 50 years of film cameras before digital came along. I refuse to use anything but my film camera with one single spot meter.
Surely we have some p users the same, how are you metering scenes with high dynamic range and no obvious midtone ie a forest by a lake
>>
>>4307184
You do not "find" a midtone when using a spotmeter. It's the wrong way to think about how a spot meter works. Do not apply incident meter thinking to a spot meter.

A spot meter shows you the exposure that would set your metered area to zone 5, or middle gray. With that information you set your exposure to place your metered area into the correct zone.

You must properly expose shadows or you will not get information onto the film, so pick the darkest section that has important information, and then increase your exposure setting by 3 stops. That will place your shadows at zone 2, which is as dark as you can get while still recording detail/information. >>4307029 look at pic. The different zones are stops of exposure.

NOW you measure your highlights. If your highlights are showing over the maximum dynamic range of your film then you must reduce the contrast of the negative by pulling the development. When you reduce your development time it stops the highlights from becoming too dense to print/scan. There are dev times you can look up when doing this with certain developers.

It becomes difficult to utilize pushing/pulling properly if you are developing an entire roll of film, so you need to decide if a little bit more highlight information or a little bit more shadow information is more important to you. Generally speaking decent b&w film is pretty good at retaining highlights, so I would suggest focusing on proper shadow exposure, so you can get as much information onto your negstive as possible.

Read about the zone system if you want a better explanation.

/fgt/ daily reminder (courtesy by anon): one stop per decade is (generally) bullshit
>negative film ages better than positive
>black and white better than color
>slow films better than fast
>storage conditions (dry/cool) matter more than years
>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops overexposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited
>slide/positive film is shot at box speed or overexposed and pulled.
>if you home develop you can also use benzotriazole as a restrainer for the the first developer in E6 process

portra is more used because its for new people that see 'film' being done on youtube shorts or instagram reels and they all use portra. when i last went to the lab, the person in front of me in line was asking what "keeping negatives" mean all while buying 2 rolls of portra. ektar is basically negative slide film and is way better than that shit

Got a good bonus at work and decided to finally retire my Canon 6D. Will be going Sony after seeing what the mirrorless landscape looks like with CaNikon.

Canon, makes decent bodies and fantastic lenses, that R8 is probably the best entry level FF camera you can get. Still gatekeeping RF mount and will no doubt cripple R bodies to protect the cinema line. Lenses are probably the best but almost double the price of Snoys in my meme country.

Nikon, feels the best to me in hand and I really like the RAWs the most. Menus and AF settings make the most sense but no real Z mount 16-35 f2.8 equivalent and the pro-grade 50mm being the size of a 24-70 is a big loss since those are my two most lenses.

Sony, looks like the logical choice. Bodies have everything you could need crammed into them, native lenses are a good balance between perfect optical quality and being corrected by software means I don't carry around any too big or heavy. I like being able to buy an A7S/FX3 in the future if I wanted to get serious with vid. Colors/skin tones don't seem to be oversharpened/saturated like before. Ergonomics aren't the best and you do get the stigma of being another zoomer buying a Sony to shoot zoomer things but hey, it is what it is.

Pic related, hopefully me with my Snoy A7IV.

A7IV sucks for vids with the backplate being plastic instead of magnesium. Blame Snoy for cheaping out on Playstation quality. If you care about video instead of stills, spend more or wait and pray for next gen. If you already have a plan for A7S/FX3 why not got them now? Getting something you don't want now is always inefficient with photography.
>>
>>4306444
My current work now is 95% stills and I'm still learning video so I don't want to buy an FX3 and be like wtf am I doing. I shoot weddings and events now but I have some other areas I'm looking at where I think video content would be what I want to make instead of stills.

Would rather get an A7IV and get building the lens collection and then upgrade to one of their vid centric offerings when I know where I'm hitting the limitations of the A7IV and have a better idea of what will be the next body to give me what I need.

Got it in 2004 for my birthday. Dad spent $400 on this sucker plus the 256-512MB memory cards. It was awesome with the 4x optical zoom and fit in the back seat compartment of my motorcycle so I took it everywhere and got some great pictures. Sensor died not even three years later so my only complaint.

I’ll have to grab a few shots from my computer later, but looking back at some of the pics I’m still impressed with the quality of this little guy. They sometimes have that “DSLR” look instead of the processed iPhone camera look.

AGFA ePhoto Smile
First camera that was sub-$100 (on sale.) And I didn't even have a proper connection to offload the photos. It was only set up for PCs, and I had a Macintosh with a video capture card. So I fed the playback through that and took video screencaps.

Is the Peak Design Travel Tripod really the best lightweight compact tripod that still gets the job done?

as I've stated multiple times when on discount it's probably a nice travel tripod all things considered
remember I've bought it for around 120€ cheaper than the F38 Ulanzi (comparing this tripod bought inside the EU with 2 year warranty vs Ulanzi shipped from China)
especially if you wanna avoid any knobs protruding away from it or having to rotate the legs 180° from the storage position or any strange colours and so on

are the more expensive tripods nicer? yes
would I spend twice as much on a travel tripod? no

So far I've only shot a single day with the tripod. With the 300mm f/4.5 and the OM-4Ti mounted. It was an ok experience even in a very windy (up to 40m/s gusts of wind) weather.

I have one, also bought ulanzi one. The PD is still new in box, been like this for months.

The PD cost was far more than ulanzi for the price. Though PD do have a quicker extending ability than ulanzi and also the build will be better. Messed up some photos from Norway as the cameras weight pulled down on the QD plate during a long exposure. Have now thread-locked the plate into the tripod thread to help stop this. The lock mechanism and the tilt system on the PD is so-so. Needs to be re-designed imo.

Anybody here use one of these chink arca cube knockoffs? I’m thinking of getting one but even 300 still seems a bit steep.

Why bother further developing less popular system when you can just milk larping zoomers and chink resellers with further iterations of the same x100* camera

you will have to send it out for a CLA anon
you can find such services online
ask in the Canon F-1 facebook group for example
>INB4 I don't have facebook
anon as with any other boomer infused hobby you will have to use Facebook if you need some decent advise

alternative to that is plebbit but these niggerfuckers are useless
the facebook boomers at least know their shit
