Just a friendly reminder that threads about weapons which do not pertain to their use in outdoor activities should be posted on /k/ instead. Thanks.

Fore the record I've technically been solo camping a bunch but I've always been within eye sight of other campers. I've been wild camping with friends/my ex but never alone.

I'm not usually afraid of the outdoors and when I do feel nervous about something once I start doing it I'm fine. I love to go through night drives and explore hoods, which I know is way more dangerous.

My main fear is for some reason I'll go a bit crazy and flee from my campsite and get disoriented. There's some mountain lions periodically out here but they're super super rare. I slept in grizzly country before but, again, not alone.

Anybody else feel a bit nervous then realize it wasn't that bad once you got out there?

>statistically impossible for two serial killers to run into each other in the best place to hide a body.

Not to mention who tf asked
>>
>>2729100
I've been "solo" camping multiple times, but if I'm heading off without other people I always bring my dog with me. I've not been in grizzly country but I've spent a lot of time hiking and camping in mountain lion territory. If I'm going to be alone, having both my Malinois and a gun with me goes a long way to making me feel more secure.
>>
>>2729100
I'm too scared of people to sleep anywhere near them while camping, unless it's family/friends. Just be scared of others judging you and you'll prefer the unsafety of solitude.

>Going into mountain lion country alone
>Bring dogs
That's quite literally statistically the worst thing you can do. Being alone is bad enough, alone with dogs is way worse. There's a reason a lot of places in mountain lion country don't allow you to bring dogs.

What are some dangerous jobs that an able bodied person can make a bunch of money in?
I've been looking into wildland firefighting but it seems like Oregon is the only place to go for that. Also the pay doesn't seem substantial.

>>
>>2733344
Nah it’s legit. I’m from rapid city and we’d get these guys from the mancamos when they’d job hop. They actually talk with their own weird slang as a mix of different USA regions and shit like Tagalog, Russian, romanian, Spanish, Chinese, and Portuguese. People used to hate them and see them as rough vagabonds but I never had issues with them.
>>
>>2733344
It's hard to believe three random Bakkenites are in this thread but they know the lingo so maybe it's legit. My dad moved us from Bakersfield after the crash and I lived in a family unit in a mancamp for two years until we got enough for him to move back to Cali. He never talked like a Bakkenite with us but could do it with others and I picked some up and yeah it's actually true they talk like this. These guys aren't even talking full Bakkenise probably because nobody's talked with them in it for 10+ years. The one guy said Bakerites aka people from Bakersfield like my dad. Siskis are from Siskiyou county, Ogalamaks = from western Nebraska. I used to get hate from the few other kids from being Bakerite.

BTW the "ya hear me" is from from ghetto blacks but not ghetto blacks from LA or Chicago or Philly... I mean southern ghetto blacks from the Mississippi delta. They literally end every sentence with "Ye hear me" and a ton of them flocked there, especially from deep Louisiana

Nature is the constant, the unchanging, and pretty much the default form of existence. We as humans like to take control, and change the world we live in, but by doing that we make it complicated, confusing and obtuse.

It doesn't matter who you are, where you're at, and what you have or what you don't have, you can always return to that constant as it lies underneath the facade of society we've built. I think its no surprise that people who've never experienced the constant let alone established a relationship with it are unhinged neurotic messes.

It is sort of crazy. A woman I work with mentioned doing a reno on their house, pouring a pad, and adding a metal shop to their backyard. She told me that they paid for it by cashing out her husband's 401k and then taking a loan as well. They have matching UTVs that aren't paid off and a travel trailer. I make more than she does and her husband makes a little less than her. Fucking crazy. We're all mid thirties and make decent money but some people spend like it's going out of style.

>But a financial dip (not 99% unemployment) is much more likely.
On one hand, yeah, financial crises are absolutely more likely than many other emergencies and probably the first thing most people should be prepping for. On the other hand, surely everyone already has financial security as a goal? Like, if you tell someone they should pay down their debt and have enough savings to ride out an illness or period of unemployment, aren't most people just going to say "yeah, I'm fucking trying". Maybe some people need the reminder.
And it's not like a sensible amount of preps will have any real impact on someone's finances ... you're more paying down a mortgage for the cost of water filter, a first aid kit and a few dozen pounds of rice.
>>
>>2729691
this, my retirement is on track, house will be paid off in around 7 years. job security is better than average. I have a 12 month emergency fund. I have a couple guns and know how to use them. I could go 3 months without leaving for food, water, or fuel. If you camp and have a couple key items like a battery bank and solar you're pretty much set.

people think they're going to die from roaming zombie hoards. they're really going to die from bad water, mal nutrition and infected scrapes because they don't have first aid supplies.
>>
>>2731288
>surely everyone already has financial security as a goal?
nope. you'd be really surprised who shitty the average Americans personal finances are. like unbelievably bad. I work in finance. Half of people can't come up with 1000 dollars without putting it on credit. Half. Only about 20% are save more than 5% of their income a year. Financial shit hit the fan is coming for everyone. It might be an economic downturn or it might be nothing happening and getting to retirement age to find out social security means you're going to be eating nothing but rice and beans ever. a medical hiccup puts you into bankruptcy.

No bad debt (anything but a house) and an emergency fund should be priority number 2. The only thing more important than that is your health.
>>
>>2732449
You work in finance, do you have any insight into why this is? Is it really that hard for a baseline normie to stay afloat financially, or is it because they get too much uber eats and shit?
>>
>>2733244
I'm not in finance but do earn six plural figures. My wife had cancer, my kids and their activities are expensive, and I had to plant my boomer parents in the ground after medical events. I spend on work attire, food and gas on myself, no hobbies except a library card. There isn't much leftover for retirement, I invest for my children. I have nightmares about waking up under a bridge I live under. I feel zero security despite frugality.

It's a tough call. Personally I find the knife style in the Skeletool a lot more useful for everyday stuff than one of those utility blades and it's a surprisingly slim and compact tool, maybe easier to carry than the Milwaukee, but it's dogshit as a screwdriver compared to that.

>chemicals are in the water where you go "out"
kid this board should be reserved for people who actually go outdoors, not to paid tailgating spots with paved parking lots and power hookups
>>
>>2731443
Yeah, they're fine. Filters work out cheaper in the long run but it's not like anyone is bankrupting themselves buying aquatabs.
Some tablets leave a chemical taste in the water and they're obviously not going to do anything about particulates in the water (but filtering through a bandanna is usually enough for that anyway).
Only major downside to purification tablets is that most of them are ineffective against cryptosporidium (or if they do work against crypto they require a 4h treatment time). On the other hand, filters don't generally work against viruses. In most areas crypto is a bigger threat than viruses but t b h you'll probably be fine with either.
>>
What steps are required to prevent these filters, themselves, from becoming bacterial breeding grounds? I'm a little sketched out about carrying around a filter full of crud.Is there some sort of sterilization procedure recommended for any of these? Do they ever get moldy?
>>
>>2733255
FirstNeed Purifier instructs to draw a little bleach/water up the intake and outflow for lengthy storage. Otherwise, use alone jettisons any nasty debris. Just squirt the first issue into your source water and screw on the water bottle.
